NEWCOM# (Network of Excellence in Wireless Communications) is a project funded under the umbrella of the 7th Framework Program of the European Commission (FP7-ICT-318306). NEWCOM# pursues long-term, interdisciplinary research on the most advanced aspects of wireless communications like Finding the Ultimate Limits of Communication Networks, Opportunistic and Cooperative Communications, or Energy- and Bandwidth-Efficient Communications and Networking. Distinguished Prof. Shlomo Shamai (Shitz), of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of Technion (Haifa, Israel), is the recipient of Yad Hanadiv's 2014 Rothschild Prize in Mathematics/Computer Sciences and Engineering.
The prize was awarded in Jerusalem in March 2014.

Cellular system deployment has reached practical limits in many dense urban area while the demand for data traffic is steadily increasing. This leaves cellular operators with few options to enhance the area spectral efficiency. Unfortunately, radio link improvements, including coding, cognitive transmission, and multiple antennas, are reaching their theoretical limits.
