Technical University of Aachen
Technical University of Aachen (RWTH Aachen University) is one of Germany’s leading universities of technology founded in 1870. It offers degrees in the different engineering areas, natural sciences and medicine as well as in humanities, business and economics. It is renowned for its strong orientation towards industrial applications and has a leading position among German universities in third party research funding for many years already. In the current excellence initiative of the German Federal and State Governments, RWTH Aachen was awarded – after thorough evaluation by renowned international scientists - funding of two research clusters, in mechanical engineering (production technology) and electrical engineering and information technology (wireless communication).
Its strong position in these areas is confirmed by the top positions RWTH Aachen consistently achieves in most national rankings. Two chairs of RWTH Aachen are engaged in Newcom: Wireless Networks (Petri Mähönen) and Integrated Signal Processing Systems (Gerd Ascheid, Heinrich Meyr, Rainer Leupers). Main participation is in the physical layer related WPs concerning partial channel state information and iterative receivers, the network related WPs studying radio resource management, network information theory and opportunistic networks and in WPR.C where flexibility aspects, in particular,
with respect to implementation are considered. Both chairs have strong expertise in these fields demonstrated by their publication records and involvement in numerous related research projects. In particular, both chairs have leading roles in the above mentioned research cluster on “Ultra highspeed mobile information and communication (UMIC)”, covering fields matching the WPs where they participate. Thus, the participation also creates strong ties between the “Cluster of Excellence” UMIC and the “Network of Excellence” Newcom++. Last but not least, ISS has been very active in these fields already in Newcom.
