Spreading of Excellence

Spreading of excellence consists of communicating to the world research community (via workshops, conferences and journal special issues) the results achieved within the framework of the NoE. This ensures that Europe takes a fair share of the basic innovation and technology developments worldwide towards 4G wireless systems and beyond. Another major objective is to strongly liaise with European industry and transfer research results that are usable in the short and medium terms. As part of the spreading of excellence activities, the project will actively participate in the activities organised at programme level relating to the ICT Future Networks area with the objective of providing input towards common activities and receiving feedback (e.g. from clusters and coordination groups), offering advice and guidance and receiving information relating to ICT programme implementation, standards, policy and regulatory activities, national or international initiatives, etc.

In line with its obligations regarding dissemination of results and achievements, the coordinator of NEWCOM++ will insures that all public documents (including, but not restricted to, the following material: video material covering experiments, trials; animations of "real-time" simulation results; presentations, animated/voice-over or not; promotional material (leaflets, posters, etc.); press releases etc.) generated by the project are duly collected in a Dissemination Package which is associated with the periodic reports.

Spreading of Excellence (SoE) is organized in four work packages.

The first is the organization of workshops and conferences. Workshops can be organized at major international conferences such as the IEEE International Conference on Communications (ICC), which is the world premier annual conference in the field of communications and networking. This allows communicating the research results to a very wide international audience often exceeding 1,400 – 1,500 individuals from 60+ countries.

Another way of spreading excellence is to organize special NEWCOM++ sessions at various general purpose and/or specialized conferences. This activity is very essential for communicating the results of the NoE to the world technical community, displaying its expertise and establishing a strong credibility. Within the the three years of SoE activities, NEWCOM++ will consider the possibility to contribute to the organisation of a Mobile IST Summit, the possibility to participate into the ICT Summit 2008 in Lyon, and, more in general, to support other conferences related to its area of expertise.

The second work package concerns the organization of journal issues. To get the highest credit, this activity will address the most renowned international and European journals with a strong readership base. The main target journals are the IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications (JSAC), the EURASIP Journal on Wireless Communications and Networking, the European Transactions on Telecommunications and Related technologies (ETT), and some other specialized journals that are open to the publication of special issues. It is anticipated that one or two special issues will be organized each year during the lifetime of this NoE.

The third work package, entitled Dissemination Days and Industry Liaison, specifically targets the transfer of know-how and maturing technology to European industry for use in products and services in the short and medium terms. Interaction with industry will be established during industry forums and at other events, but the main interaction will be made at the Dissemination Days to be organized at the end of each year of the NoE. At those events, partners of the NoE will present
demonstrations, software packages, hardware and other important results which may be of interest to industry. The program of the Dissemination Days will be sent to representatives of European wireless industry including network operators, service providers, equipment manufacturers/vendors, technology companies, and all other companies and organizations which may be interested in these events and more generally in wireless communications and networking research. The purpose of this work package is to help European industry take a strong position in the world competition for
leadership in future wireless technologies.

The fourth workpackage, entitled Virtual Centre of Excellence on Wireless Communications is intended to settle a permanent reference point for the whole worldwide scientific community interested in research and advanced technology in wireless communications, well beyond the lifetime and the partner composition of NEWCOM++. The core of the initiative will be the activation of a so-called Virtual Centre of Excellence on Wireless Communications (ViCE-WiCom), which should act as a reference for all interested stakeholders in the field, with the aim to foster the transfer of knowledge, teachware, and software among open communities.
