Integration

Integration actions in an NoE are clearly the fundamental means for creating links among researchers, and hence, contribute to achieve the main goal of this type of R&D instrument. By establishing adequate tools for integration, a NoE enables the researchers that are part of the consortium to produce joint work, to get critical mass in joint development, and to achieve significant joint results.

In this project, the Integration set of activities is composed of 6 WPs:

A brief description of each of these WPs follows.

WP I.1 - Web-based integration tools aims to create a single online reference point - a ‘web portal’ - as an evolution and integration of NEWCOM’s web tools and the implementation of brand new ones, , with a special eye on their usability and appeal. We strive to capitalise on a 3-year-old experience and benefit from recent web 2.0 paradigms and practices. Some keywords: knowledge and document management, semantic web, online communities.

WP I.2 - Higher education in wireless communications is part of a vision to pursue an action of coordination and integration among the different post-graduate programmes in partners’ schools. This will be done following different strategies currently offered by international agreements, in which Ph.D. students spend some time in a different institution, by signing multilateral agreements among Universities. One of the goals is to take actions to make it possible for Ph.D. students to obtain their degree by at least two partner institutions. In order to reach this goal, mutual agreements will be proposed to participating partners, and a calendar of common courses based on tele-teaching and multimedia technology will be organized each year, together with Summer/Winter Schools. These activities will be offered not only to partners, but also, under conditions to be agreed upon, to non-partner European Universities, hence, creating conditions for an adequate spread of integration results throughout Europe.

WP I.3 - Valorisation of human capital is devoted to the personal development of the members of the participating institutions, namely the Ph.D. students and the researchers. It aims at encouraging researchers to publish their joint research work on internationally recognised journals and conferences, at fostering a healthy competition among researchers and institutions by creating awards in recognition of excellent cooperative research, and at enhancing the face-to-face and the long-term research cooperation links by promoting visiting researchers exchange. In order to achieve these objectives, awards will be created for both Best Paper and Young Researcher, as well as for Distinguished Achievements. Via the NEWCOM++ Mobility Office, exchange of researchers among different institutions will be promoted, including the issuing of grants to encourage mobility.

WP I.4 - Integrated simulation library aims at building a simulation software library for the joint research activities of the partners. The WP will exploit the experience and skills of the members of the consortium to create a framework that will collect software modules, reference scenarios, and results, therefore, facilitating the sharing of knowledge and the cooperation among partners. Several key activities are defined in this WP, e.g.: evaluation of needs and expectations of partners regarding the software library and the listing of resources that partners are willing to share; design of the software library; definition of reference scenarios to be used with the software library; sample scenario implementation, and finally monitoring of the activity of the Research WPs, in order to update the library.

WP I.5 - Vision book will focus on the preparation of a report describing in detail the status of fundamental research open problems in the realm of wireless communication networks, with particular emphasis on those dealing with performance limits and algorithms/techniques to approach them. The final result will be of use for both the researchers community (in particular, for Ph.D. students seeking for key problems to be attacked and solved), and the industry engineers providing the cost-benefits trade-off analysis and the implementation support. After initially establishing a group of experts with competences in wireless communication networks, a preliminary report synthesizing the initial analysis performed by the various WPs will be prepared. After this, information will be gathered from many sources, like research fora, European projects, national agencies programs, etc., in order to prepare and yearly update the Vision Book.

WP I.6 - The INTEGRAL

work package acts as an interface between NEWCOM++ and the outside world in terms of receiving guiding elements for the overall research activities in the NoE. The guidance from the outside world takes on four different forms: trends, constraints, requirements, and inspiration. The trends are those of the information society in general, and communications systems in particular. The constraints are given by technological, regulatory, standardization, economic issues. The requirements are expressed in terms of specifications for services, architectures, networks, links, and equipment. Finally, the inspiration comes from an inter-disciplinary analysis of various fields (e.g., embedded systems, nano-technologies, biology, etc) in a quest for thought provoking analogies.
